How complicated is the façade lighting of a historical building and requires such intricate involvement of the lighting designer? Many façade structures are simple and clear, and the space for creative design is very small. However, in this case, it is clear that the facade requires more than a sophisticated solution. Design needs to stand the test of time.
Designed by the architect William Bumet Tuthill and built by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1891, this famous venue for classical and pop music is located on Seventh Avenue in New York City Two blocks south of Central Park.
From 1987 to 1989, a 60-story office building named Carnegie Hall Tower designed by César pelli&Associates was built next to the venue in the same block. In 2014, Carnegie Hall opened the Judith and Burton Resnick Education Wing, which includes 24 music rooms, one of which is large enough to accommodate an orchestra or chorus.
With the rapid development of LED technology, lighting designers know very well that their designs must be outdated and stand the test of the future. The specified dimming control system should be coordinated with advanced LED technology.
Since the Carnegie Hall is a national historic site, the entire process needs to be vigilant and documented to ensure that all perforations and bracket installations are controlled in a repAIrable position. As a 125-year-old existing building that is constantly evolving, the perforated area is not always easy to access, and the installation location suggested by the designer often proves that the structure is unreasonable.
In addition, the "Good Neighbor Policy" of Carnegie Hall requires that the optical elements and shields used in the Carnegie Hall must not have any light leakage into the adjacent buildings, and comply with the landmark contract. To this end, extensive field simulations were conducted to explore the distribution of LEDs, light output, installation methods and visual effects.
After installing the designed scheme, the programmed lighting is slowly staged to ensure balance and clarity of the facade. Richard Malenka of Carnegie Hall aptly described this at the opening ceremony: "As the sun sets, the lighting is slowly staged, achieving a seamless transition from dusk to night."
For more than a century, Carnegie Hall has not only staged countless classical concerts, but also many jazz, pop and rock stars also have unforgettable performances here, including Benny Goodman, Ai Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Harry Belafonte, Tina Turner and others.
