New Zealand to Ban Many Single-Use Plastics by 2025
In 2018, it was found that half of all plastic produced was made to be used just once and then thrown away. New Zealand has now joined the growing list of countries trying to do something about it.
New Zealand has announced that it will ban many single-use plastics by 2025. The ban includes items such as plastic plates, straws, stirrers and even fruit labels. The items will be banned in three stages, starting in late 2022 and ending with everything on the list being banned by July 2025.
Environment minister David Parker sAId New Zealanders throw away an estimated 159 grams of plastic waste per person every day. Per capita, New Zealand is one of the top 10 countries in the world producing the most landfill waste.
The new ban will stop an estimated 2 billion single-use items from going to landfills or into the environment every year.
However, the ban won't include single-use cups, wet wipes and other types of plastic used to move cold goods or protect large items. Parker said the government is developing a plan for what can be done about these plastic items, and a decision is expected in 2022.
The country already banned single-use plastic bags in 2019. "We know New Zealanders are ready to do more," said Parker.
Other countries already have similar bans. England banned items such as plastic straws and stirrers in 2020. Canada will be banning similar items by the end of 2021, and Australia has announced a plan to ban many single-use plastics by the end of 2025. Questions
